About the album

Signum Classics are proud to present superstar soprano Angela Gheorghiu’s first album on vinyl on the Grammy award winning label. Described as “the world’s most glamorous and gifted opera star” (New York Sun), Ms. Gheorghiu’s magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have established her as a unique international opera superstar. Her new album, released to mark the 100th anniversary of celebrated composer Giacomo Puccini's death, brings together a collection of little-known songs spanning his entire career. The album features a World Premiere Recording of the recently rediscovered song “Melanconia”. It also includes songs that Puccini used as an inspiration in his famous operas, such as "Sole e amore", "Mentia l'avviso", "Sogno d'or" and "Morire?". Other notable works on the recording are “Salve Regina” and the title track “A te” composed by Puccini at just 16 years old.

It was here that she first sang her much acclaimed Violetta in La Traviata (1994), when the BBC cleared out its schedules to broadcast the opera live. Worldwide, the press headlined that “A star is born”. Since then, she appears at the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls.

She has recorded widely for EMI (Warner) Classics and Decca and has received numerous international artistic honours, including Chevalier and Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Nihil Sine Deo decoration from King Michael of Romania, the European Cultural Award for Music, multiple Gramophone awards and twice the Female Artist of the Year (Classical BRIT Awards).

Angela Gheorghiu performed and played in Benoît Jacquot’s film Tosca and Juliette in the film Roméo et Juliette.

She performed at the reopening gala of the Royal Opera House (1999) and of the Teatro Malibran Venice (2001). She sang at the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee, at Buckingham Palace (2002), and at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert (2003). She sang for Pope John Paul II (2002). In 2005, she sang at the opening of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (Valencia), in the presence of Queen Sofia of Spain, and at the Queen Beatrix Silver Jubilee Gala in Amsterdam. In 2007, she performs Fanny in the world premiere of Vladimir Cosma’s Marius et Fanny. In 2011 she sang at the reopening of the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow) and at the opening of the Katara Amphitheater (Doha, Qatar), performing music especially composed for her by legendary Greek composer Vangelis. She sang for the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II (2012). February 2022 marked her 30th anniversary with the Royal Opera House, where she reprised Tosca to great acclaim.

In the history of opera, Angela Gheorghiu shines as a rare phenomenon: not only a singer/actress with an exceptional vocal technique and profound dramatic and musical intelligence, but also a magnetic communicator who penetrates the hearts and minds of a panoramic spectrum of audiences. She has brought the very highest values of operatic art to a vast worldwide community on an unusually broad scale.

Giacomo Puccini

The Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini is viewed as the most important succesor of Giuseppe Verdi. Puccini was a true theatre man, who knew how to combine words, gesture and music seamlessly to emotionally touch the audience. Puccini's creative process was a tormented him. Often, librettists had to swallow a lot before he was satisfied with the text. Because of this, he only composed relatively few operas, but among those are some real masterworks. In his opera Tosca, Puccini knows how to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, and in his operas La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, it is hard not to weep in the end.
Moreover, Puccini was able to compose arias which Verdi would have called "something for the organ grinder": melodies which linger in your head and people sing in the streets. This was proven once again by his famous "Nessun Dorma", which was used for the world championship football, and his "O Mio Babbino Caro" which was used in a well-known commercial. Due to his popularity and commercial success, critics did not acknowledge his talents for a long time. They accused him of a sensationalist approach. His reputation as a lover of women and fast cars certainly didn't help with his image either!
